Why Codex quota runs out early
Running out early is usually a timing problem, not a failure to understand the current percentage. Workload varies, and a balance says nothing by itself about the time left.
Early bursts hide the real pace
A productive burst can consume a large share near the start of a reset window. The remaining percentage may still look comfortable even though the average pace required for the rest of the window is now much lower.
Compare balance remaining with time remaining. If 60% of the allowance must cover 85% of the window, the schedule has less room than the headline percentage suggests.
Heavy tasks change the slope
Codex usage varies with task size, complexity, model, and surface. A long agent run can change the trajectory much more than several lightweight prompts.
Treat a projection as a moving estimate. Recheck after unusually heavy work instead of assuming yesterday’s pace will continue unchanged.
Longer windows still matter
When the page shows more than one limit, a comfortable near-term balance can coexist with pressure in a longer reset window or shared pool.
The steadier decision protects the constrained balance. Extra room in one card is not useful if another applicable limit reaches zero first.
A small pacing habit
Use the visible reset time, keep a reserve for unexpected work, and compare the current balance with a recent local trajectory. Slow down only when the evidence points that way.
Uncertain evidence should produce softer guidance, not false precision. A forecast can help decide when to check again without pretending the future is fixed.
